16th Annual State Street Blues Stroll

WXPN WELCOMES and The Media Business Authority proudly presents Shemekia Copeland as our headline performer at the Media Theatre.
  • 2016 Grammy Awards Nominee - Best Blues Album Outskirts of Love
  • 2016 Blues Music Awards Contemporary Blues Female Artist
  • BB King Entertainer of the Year - Country Blues Album - Contemporary Blues Female Artist
  • Winner of Various Living Blues Awards - 2010 Blues Artist of the Year
  • Past Winner of Eight Blues Music Awards
Shemekia has performed thousands of gigs around the world. She has appeared with Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, BB King, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Carlos Santana, and James Cotton. Shemekia performed at The White House for President and Mrs. Obama in 2012. Since bursting on the scene in 1998 with her first of eight remarkable CDs, she has steadily ascended to a position among the highest echelon of Blues vocalists. The City of Chicago declared Shemekia "The New Queen of The Blues" in 2011. She is the daughter of Blues Legend, the late guitarist/singer Johnny Clyde Copeland. Shemekia's her new CD Outskirts of Love on Alligator Records, released last September, is a musical tour de force. The Chicago Tribune described it as, "Fiery, gutsy rock, impassioned soul, and stunning slow-burners ... a force of nature." Whether she's belting out a raucous Blues-rocker, firing up a blistering Soul-shouter, bringing the spirit to Gospel-fueled R&B, or digging deep into a subtle Country-tinged ballad, Shemekia Copeland sounds like no one else. We are honored to have her perform at the 2016 State Street Blues Stroll. Come to State Street in downtown Media and experience a full round of Blues as performed by talented artists at 23 indoor venues and two outdoor stages. We have a full evening of music, so make dinner reservations before the show! "State Street's all right, and the lights shine nice and bright." -- Bessemer Blues - Ma Rainey (1927)
